The Nintendo brand is, simply put, the biggest in handheld games consoles. Anyone born from 1980 onwards is likely to have had a Game Boy of some description at a juncture in their lives. Developed and grown in Japan, Nintendo is still responsible for making some of the most popular games consoles on the planet, most recently the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DSi.
Originating in latter period of the 19th century, Nintendo actually began as a company that made playing cards. It was here in which the brand developed its inquisitive nature for invention, trialling products such as the love tester.
It was in 1980 however, where the Nintendo brand really took off, upon the release of their first handheld games console – The Game and Watch. Five years after switching to electronics they had finally released a console, which proved popular all over the world. In 1989 Nintendo launched the Game Boy, which over time became the most successful chain of consoles ever seen. The success of the Game boy was followed by a number of additions to the Nintendo family, including the Super Nintendo, the Game Cube and The Nintendo 64.
In recent times Nintendo has reverted to more traditional consoles, revelling in the success of the groundbreaking Nintendo Wii Controller, however has remained true to its handheld fans with the Nintendo DS series. The father of Super Mario and Donkey Kong, Nintendo is built in to the culture of anyone alive today in the western world, and we await the arrival of the Nintendo DSi.
